“Even the models we see in magazines wish they could look like
their own images.” ― Cheri K. Erdman
“Comparison is the thief of joy.” ― Theodore Roosevelt
Unfortunately, all of us struggle with body image. We’re constantly wishing we looked like that girl on Instagram, the girl sitting next to you, or even the picture of you from 5 pounds ago. Although it can’t take away the struggle, take comfort in knowing that you aren’t the only one wishing you looked like someone else. Even the girl you think is flawless is still comparing herself to others. I’m not telling you this to make you think that it will never get better. I’m telling you this in hopes that we can encourage an honest community. If you’re struggling with something, go talk to someone, because chances are they’re feeling something similar. Instead of thinking about your insecurity and creating feelings of hatred towards yourself, you can go talk to someone about your struggles. We all struggle with body image, but instead of holding it all in and pretending that we’re fine, it can really help to just put it all out in the open.
Sometimes we feel that we’re the only one struggling with something because everyone is constantly projecting out an image of togetherness and joy. Be the person to break down the wall and be honest with how you’re feeling. It will encourage others to reach out as well. If you and your friend are struggling, it can help to get together and come up with ways to help each other out or to even just encourage each other.
Although we’re all struggling, use these struggles to help grow a comforting community. You’re never alone in a struggle with body image. Tell someone how you’re feeling. Chances are they may feel the same way and know how to help.
Song: Lean on Me by Bill Withers
Journal: Who do you compare yourself to? What parts of body image do you struggle with? After you’re finished, cross out everything on your list, because you don’t need to be tied down to those insecurities (I promise it will make you feel better).
The Main Idea: Body image is something everyone struggles with-- use this truth to grow a community of comfort and joy.
