This week was my first week back to school, and it was a little rough. It wasn't really bad, it just wasn't one of the greatest weeks of my life. There was that thing where I had to wake up at 6:15 instead of 10:30. I had a ton of dance which added on to the lack of sleep, I had homework for the first time in 2 months and an AP Calc quiz on topics I knew nothing about. I was hecka stressed and I hated it.
Naturally, school brings along more stress. It's a days worth of work, along with extracurriculars, homework, and a social life. There's a lot more going on, so there's a lot more to stress about. Stress is something that can come very quickly and easily. Although it's not very difficult to begin stressing about something, it's super hard to let it go. And when stress from everything you've got going on starts piling on-- things can get nasty.
This is why it's important to find your sanctuary-- your safe, calm, and happy place. You need to go there often, especially when things get too hard and too taxing. On busy school nights it can be really hard to find time to unwind. I love relaxing at the end of the day, but often times it's too late to really get some extended time to do what I need to do. My foolproof plan for this is to listen to the Vapor meditation by The Liturgists. It's less than 10 minutes, so at the end of a crammed and stressful night, I get in bed, pop in my headphones, and listen to it right before I go to bed. It helps me put everything in perspective quickly and it's crazy how much stress leaves me after just a few minutes.
It's also super nice to spend a ton of time in your sanctuary. Take advantage of calm days to find things you like to do. Just the other night I had a strong urge to make myself a cup of tea, put on some cozy socks, light my candle and read the fifth Harry Potter book while snuggled up in my bed. Allow yourself to have those Pinterest perfect moments-- you know, those pictures with books and blankets and socks and coffee? Do that on a free Saturday morning. Read your favorite childhood book. Journal. Put on some music and draw what you feel without worrying about the final product. Talk to your mom, walk your dog, take that highly needed nap. Paint your nails, do the face mask you've been saving for a special occasion. Although school is stressful, there's no reason we can't allow ourselves moments of calm. Take advantage of your free time. Don't waste it on your phone! Instead, use it for all the things you want to be doing that you see on Pinterest and Instagram.
It doesn't take any time at all to create your own sanctuary. You can put on your favorite jams in between classes. Walk your dog when you get home instead of mindlessly wandering through your phone. Read a book instead of starting your 6th episode of Parks and Rec. The point is, you need time to unwind, so take advantage of any period of time, big or small, and send some love waves to yourself. Take a break, because it is so deserved!! Remember, you are so worth loving and taking care of. You need it!!
Thank you so much for reading!! See ya later! <3
