we need it. summer can be a time where we neglect quality rest. for me, i wake up semi-early, i go to work, i come home and hang out with friends until it's late, then i stay up for hours, only to have to wake up bright and early the next day. but lately i've realized the importance of attending to my need of sleep and rest.
i work everyday, and on top of that i usually go out most nights and i found myself getting rundown and tired. i realized that sometimes i need a break. i've realized that i don't need to stay up until 2 a.m. every night. i've found myself learning to listen to my body. i've decided to start trying my best to go to sleep when i'm tired, instead of forcing myself to stay up because it's summer and that's what you're supposed to do. i'm a little sick right now, so i'm working on being even better about that. i had plans with friends, and as much as i wanted to go through with them because i love the girls i was going to hang out with, i realized that my body needed a chill night and an early bedtime, so i had to cancel.
i feel like sometimes we feel obligated to make plans all the time and be busy at all hours of the day because it's summer and we need to live every moment like it's our last. while that can be a good mindset for living life to the fullest, recognize that sometimes it's necessary to step back and give your body a second to catch up to your mind.
listen to what your body is telling you. if it's craving sleep, don't force it to watch that next episode of gossip girl. instead, turn off the lights and just let yourself sleep. stay in when you need it. resting can also include caching up on the things that slip your mind when you're breezing through life at a million miles an hour. rest can be giving yourself a spa day. it can be a mental rest, too. take a cleanse from social media. take a day off with the workouts. give your body something healthy, but also let it enjoy what it's eating.
you only get one body, so its your job to take care of it, and that includes giving it some rest. rest is basically the human equivalent of sitting on the charger after a long day of use. we all tend to freak out when our phone batteries start to die. imagine how rested and good we would feel if we placed that same emphasis on recharging ourselves.
we kinda tend to slam on rest days with our no-days-off mentality, but we need those days to help us bounce back and prepare for whatever we have coming next.
you deserve the time to sit back, relax, and rest. it's summer, so get in the habit of resting now while you have the time. it's not a luxury, it's a priority.
