Hey guys! If you're a teenager like me, you probably barely get any sleep. I get more sleep than most of my friends, but it's still only about 7 hours, which is WAY less than the amount I should be getting. Today I want to talk about ways to get more sleep and how to set yourself up for bed. I'm going to feel like a total YouTuber while we're doing this (which isn't a bad thing), but sleep is crucial to happiness so we're going to do it anyways.
The first step to a goodnight sleep is actually the beginning of your day. In school you need to be focused during class so you learn as much as possible and can come home and have an easier time with your homework. If you don't pay attention in class, you'll have to come home and teach yourself what you did in class along with doing your homework. That's going to add a ton of extra time to what you need to be doing when you get home from school, so pay attention while you're in class.
I know when you get home from school, the very last thing you want to do is homework. Trust me, I feel the exact same way. Come home from school and take a 20 minute break to eat and go on your phone or whatever it is that you need to do to have a break from school. Then put your phone away or any other distractions and start studying (p.s. I wrote a blog post on study tips). If you get everything out of the way as soon as possible and don't procrastinate, the rest of your evening will be much more relaxing. I know some nights you have more work than others and that some nights you'll be working for a lot longer than you want to. For nights like those it's important to plan ahead.
You can't anticipate how much homework you'll get assigned each day, but you can plan out important events and long-term assignments. I suggest using a planner or the calendar app on your phone. Write down the things you need to do, such as practices, family events, or parties. If you write those down you can get a better idea of how much time you'll have to work on homework each night. This can help you get ahead and have a smoother week. For example, say you have nothing to do on Tuesday but you have soccer practice, a club meeting, and a family dinner on Wednesday night. You obviously won't have as much time to do work on Wednesday, so use your free day to your advantage and get ahead so you can make Wednesday as stress-free as possible.
When you're getting ready to go to bed, it's important to set yourself up to relax. Before I start getting ready for bed, I clean my room and organize myself for school the next day. I make sure I have everything together that I need for the next day (outfits, school supplies, setting alarms, lunch, etc.) so I can have a smooth morning. Then I set up my room so it has a nice vibe. I have these fairy light things in my room so I turn those on and turn off the rest of my lights so it's darker. I play some calm music (I recommend The Lumineers or Vance Joy. I'll leave a sleep playlist down below.) and I light some candles. I get out my journal or book and put them next to my bed. Then I start getting myself ready for bed.
I like to do everything before I shower so as soon as I'm done showering I can go right to bed. I brush my teeth and take my makeup off (I recommend using Pond's Cold Cream it's super awesome). After I take my shower I get in some comfy clothes and do my skincare routine. Do not skip taking care of your face! You will regret it in the morning! After that I get in bed.
Before you get in bed, put your phone away. If you don't you're going to be on it all night. Instead, do something that relaxes you. I love to journal, color, read or blog before going to bed. Do something that personally benefits yourself and that winds you down. You'll be surprised how quickly you'll get tired while doing something like this. Each night, try to go to bed a little earlier. Some nights this won't realistically work out, but try your best. Going to bed earlier will set you up for some serious success and happiness for your week.
That's all I have for today! I feel like I really channeled my inner YouTuber, but hopefully I gave you some original ideas for your nighttime life!
Thank you so much for reading!! See ya later! <3
